CHAPTER 16

Daniel

Harris slept on a sofa in living room, and Daniel had slept on the other. They hadn’t meant to stay there the night. They merely drifted off after heavy conversation, a little too much beer and tons of theories discussed. Still, neither one had come up with a solution as to how to solve the dilemma of getting the women home safely. Most importantly, in order to do that, they’d have to get Lily Tatum home safely to her husband first. She was the whole key to this nightmare.

Harris opened his eyes and shot up suddenly, it was 3:45 a.m.

“Holy shit!” his whispered hoarsely, surprised at his own voice. “That’s it! That’s the answer.”

It had come to him in a dream. Vague pieces spilled into his conscious mind, but there were not enough pieces of the puzzle in order for any of their theories to make much sense.

“What’s going on?” Daniel asked sleepily. “Are you okay, Harris?” He stretched awkwardly and shook his head. “Oh, what a night. We didn’t come up with anything, Man!” He rubbed his face with his hands as though he could rub the sleep out of his muddled mind.

“I think maybe we have,” Harris responded, glad that Daniel was awake. “And, I’m not so sure you’re going to like what I’m going to say, or even if you’re going to buy it.”

“Shit, it’s too early. I’m not sure I’m ready to hear this.” He stretched again and lifted himself off the sofa. He’d slept on the smaller one, as Harris just about fit on the larger one. “I’ll get us some coffee.”

Harris nodded. “We got coffee in this joint?”

“Coffee, in this joint, is on a timer and made at four o’clock sharp.”

“What the hell time do you get up?”

“Four. I’m usually in surgery by six and make some hospital rounds before that.”

Harris groaned and stretched his cramped and tired muscles. “Ah, the life of a doctor.”

Daniel laughed from the kitchen. “Your hours can’t be that great, my friend.”

Harris shrugged. “They’re not so bad. Deadlines are what usually get me up that early. And deadlines are only last minute when the story changes. Otherwise, it’s just another job.”

“Never on call?”

Thankfully four o’clock came and went. “Umm,” he groaned, as the aroma of coffee weighed heavily in the air. He sat watching Daniel shuffle his way from the kitchen with two cups in his hands. Retrieving one of the cups from Daniel. “Well, to answer your question, like you, I’m always on call. I usually get called in when an unexpected news event like a murder or robbery occurs, or a natural disaster.”

“I’d consider what we’re going through newsworthy,” Daniel laughed.

Once both Harris and Daniel were satisfied with their initial intake of coffee, and as awake as they were going to get so early in the morning, Daniel asked the big question.

“Okay, now what is so profound a revelation that it would be getting you up so early, without that deadline?”

Harris laughed and mumbled. “Who said there was no deadline?” Then he fell silent.
